At St. Ann School, we believe that sports are a wonderful aspect of a child’s development, offering students more than just physical activity. With spring sports starting, the athletic programs—offered in Stoughton and our surrounding communities—provide opportunities for students to engage in a variety of activities that foster teamwork, leadership, and lasting friendships that extend beyond the field, court, or rink. Whether you're a parent considering St. Ann for your child or a current family looking to explore athletic opportunities, here's a look at how athletics work at our school.
Athletics for Grades 4K-5th Grade: Getting Active and Having Fun
At St. Ann, students in 4K through 5th grade have the chance to participate in a variety of seasonal sports through Stoughton Parks and Recreation. For students who do not live in Stoughton, they would be able to participate in their local communities' Parks and Rec program. These sports include soccer, hockey, basketball, golf, tennis, softball, and baseball, giving children the opportunity to try new activities, stay active, and develop their athletic skills.
The emphasis for younger students is on fun, skill-building, and learning the fundamentals of each sport. With the guidance of volunteer coaches from Stoughton Parks and Rec, our students gain confidence, teamwork skills, and an understanding of sportsmanship. Most importantly, these activities provide a fun and engaging way for students to stay active and create friendships that can last a lifetime.
"Our son and daughter have loved playing hockey through Stoughton Youth Hockey Association. It’s helped them develop new skills while making new friends. It’s been an excellent way for both kids to stay active and have fun!" — Tyler P., 4K and 1st grade Parent
"My son’s first experience with sports through St. Ann was soccer in 4K. It was amazing to see him grow in confidence and make friends. He had a blast, and it set the stage for his love of sports!" – Jessica R., 4K and 2nd grade Parent
"Our sons have both participated in Stoughton Rec league sports. They have played basketball, baseball, soccer, even track and field camp. This has been a great way to get to know new kids in town. They enjoy being part of a team and have taken interest in new sports." — Greg S., 5th grade and 2nd grade Parent and Volunteer Coach
As students move into middle school, the athletic opportunities expand with team sports through River Bluff Middle School. Our students have the chance to participate in a variety of organized team sports, competing against other schools in the state. This transition into middle school sports allows students to develop their skills at a higher level while continuing to experience the joy of being part of a team.
At this stage, students are introduced to more structured competition, with opportunities in sports like soccer, basketball, track and field, and volleyball. The camaraderie of being on a school team teaches students discipline, responsibility, and how to work toward a common goal. Through these experiences, our students build a strong sense of team spirit.
"Watching my daughter’s confidence grow through middle school athletics has been amazing. She’s learned how to push herself, support her teammates, and thrive under pressure. These experiences will stay with her for years to come!" — Pam I., 7th grade Parent
"Middle school sports were a big step for my daughter. Not only did she improve her skills, but she also learned a lot about commitment and teamwork. The friendships she’s made on the hockey team are some she’ll have for life." – Matt H., 7th grade Parent
In addition to school-sponsored sports, many of our middle school students also participate in local club sports. These clubs often travel throughout the state to compete, offering even more opportunities for student-athletes to grow and challenge themselves in competitive environments. Club sports are a great way for students to further hone their skills, all while connecting with children from other schools and communities.
One of the greatest advantages of this combination of school and club athletics is the chance for our students to expand their social circle beyond their own school. Whether through school teams or club leagues, our athletes build lasting friendships with children from across Stoughton and the surrounding areas. These relationships often carry over into other aspects of life, creating a sense of community that transcends the playing field.
"My daughter loves her club softball team. The competition is tough, but it’s been so great for her to meet kids from other schools. I think it really helps build a broader sense of community." — Noelle H., 7th grade Parent
At St. Ann, we understand that the friendships formed through sports extend far beyond the final whistle. The teamwork, collaboration, and shared victories (and sometimes defeats) help students develop a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. The bonds formed through sports create lasting connections that students carry with them throughout their school years—and beyond.
We are proud of the supportive athletic culture our Stoughton community brings, which encourages students to grow physically, socially, and emotionally. Whether it's a first-grader kicking a soccer ball for the first time or an eighth-grader competing in a regional basketball tournament, these athletic programs provide students with the tools they need to succeed both on and off the field.
"The Stoughton Parks & Rec basketball team has been such a positive experience for my daughter, and the same goes for my son’s flag football team. Beyond learning the game, they have learned how to win graciously and handle defeat with humility. The friendships and life lessons they have gained are priceless. I am a huge fan of Stoughton Rec activities! It has been a great launching spot for new sports and for meeting more kids in town starting way back with miniball soccer on Sunday nights! We have done t-ball, little league, learn to play softball, soccer, flag football, art camp, and more!" — Corri F., 3rd and 5th grade Parent
