When Meg Veek reflects on her time at St. Ann School, where she graduated in 1967, she is deeply grateful for the foundation it provided. "The lessons I learned went far beyond textbooks—they helped mold me into the person I am today," she shares. "At the time, I took my Catholic education for granted."
Growing Up with Values and Education
Growing up in a family of nine, life was busy, and resources were tight. Meg’s mom stayed at home while her dad worked both on the farm and in a full-time state job. Despite their challenges, her father was committed to ensuring his children received a good education. "It wasn’t just about academics—it was about a well-rounded education that instilled lasting values," Meg explains. That's why her parents prioritized a Catholic education for each of them.
A Family’s Decision to Settle in Stoughton
Meg’s family moved to Stoughton shortly after St. Ann School opened. "The presence of a Catholic school was one of the main reasons my parents chose to settle here," she recalls. "I’m so thankful they did. Looking back, I can appreciate the opportunity to attend a school where faith, education, and community were woven together."
The Lessons that Went Beyond Academics
While Meg enjoyed classes like Math and Religion, St. Ann School taught her more than academics. “It instilled values that continue to guide me today,” she says. The lessons weren’t just about grades but about building character, developing empathy, and preparing for life.
The Importance of Compassion and Integrity
At St. Ann, Meg learned the importance of compassion, honesty, and integrity. "These values weren’t just taught; they were practiced daily, both in and out of the classroom," she says, laying the groundwork for a strong sense of ethics that continues to guide her.
Becoming a Christ-Like Person
Perhaps the most important lesson Meg learned was how to live as a Christ-like person. "I learned to live with compassion, humility, and awareness of my place in the world," she reflects. "I came to understand that I’m part of something bigger than myself, which fostered empathy and a desire to help others."
A Continued Commitment to Service and Community
Meg’s St. Ann values continue to guide her in her dedication to the Stoughton community. She has served on the Stoughton Hospital Foundation Board for 18 years, contributed to the Skaalen Retirement Board, and currently serves as an Ambassador on the S.T.A.R.T. Board. Additionally, she is the treasurer for the Stoughton Rotary Club, investing her time and expertise to support local initiatives. "The school’s emphasis on community, service, and faith encouraged me early on to stay active in volunteer opportunities," she says, reflecting her deep commitment to making a positive impact.
A Life of Faith and Family
Meg and her husband Bob are active parishioners at St. Ann Parish. "We’ve always felt a strong sense of faith and connection through our church family," she notes. They have two sons, a daughter, and three grandchildren, all benefiting from the values Meg learned at St. Ann.
Passing On the Gift of Catholic Education
When Meg and Bob had children, they were determined to pass on the gift of Catholic education. They sent them to St. Ann School, just as Meg's parents had done for her. "It’s been a joy to watch my children and grandchildren flourish at St. Ann, growing in knowledge, faith, and character," she shares.
Forever Grateful to St. Ann SchoolSt. Ann School will always hold a special place in Meg’s heart. "I will forever be grateful for the lessons, friendships, and values that shaped my life. St. Ann School helped me become a compassionate, responsible person who values community and faith."
