When you walk into Mrs. Jessica Matz's Kindergarten classroom at St. Ann School, it’s immediately clear why she is so beloved by students, staff, and families alike. A teacher who has dedicated her life to Catholic education, Jessica’s warm heart and strong faith shape the classroom environment in ways that go beyond academics. With over two decades of teaching experience, including the past seven years at St. Ann’s, Jessica is a true gem in the educational community.
Jessica’s journey in education began long before she entered her own classroom. A proud alum of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School and a graduate of Edgewood College, Jessica’s roots in Catholic education run deep. She spent 15 years teaching in Janesville at St. John Vianney before moving to St. Ann's, where she now teaches Kindergarten after spending four years in Pre-K 4. It’s clear from her passion and dedication that teaching isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.
Her love for Catholic education is matched by her commitment to building meaningful relationships with her students and their families. "At St. Ann’s, I have the opportunity to build relationships not only with staff but also with our school families. Over the years, they have become my second family," she says. It’s this sense of community that makes her classroom so special.
When it comes to success in the Kindergarten classroom, Jessica knows that even the smallest accomplishments are worth celebrating. "In Kindergarten, success can be seen in little ways everyday," she explains. "Some days it's just getting a child to smile–any forward progress is a success." Whether it’s a child making a new friend or mastering a new concept, Jessica finds joy in every step of her students’ development. And her approach isn’t just about academics; it’s about teaching kindness and compassion.
"Success at St. Ann’s is a bit different than in the public school. I get to teach them to be 'Christ-kind' and to use Jesus as a role model. Are we being Christ-like? Are we being kind to others? When kindergarteners show kindness, it's a win," Jessica shares. This Christ-centered approach sets St. Ann’s apart and fosters a unique sense of community–kindness is at the heart of everything.
For Jessica, one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is seeing the impact she has on her students long after they leave her classroom. "When the older kids come back and remember the special activities, projects, and conversations we have had, it’s beautiful. They remember how I made them feel, and that means the world to me," she says with a smile. It’s this lasting connection with students that makes her an unforgettable teacher.
At St. Ann’s, Jessica enjoys the benefits of a close-knit school environment. "I know every child in this school. I get so many hugs throughout the day," she says. "I know who’s in ballet, who’s in sports, and I can ask them about their lives." The small community means that Jessica is able to build deeper connections with her students, who often invite her to their birthday parties, sleepovers, and even family dinners. "Sometimes their parents don't even know," she laughs. "By the end of each year, I really feel like a part of their families." This level of personal connection is rare in larger schools, and it’s one of the many things that makes St. Ann’s such a special place.
In Jessica’s classroom, every student has a role to play. "The first thing I teach them is that they belong. They are all a part of this classroom. They have jobs and responsibilities," she says. With an emphasis on kindness, respect, and positive behavior reinforcement, Jessica creates a classroom environment where children feel valued and loved. She’s quick to point out the good behavior of others and uses positivity to encourage her students to make the right choices. "Kindergarteners are truly people pleasers—they want to do what’s expected of them, to do it to the best of their ability, and to just be loved," she explains.
Jessica’s commitment to her students goes beyond creating a warm, nurturing environment. She works tirelessly to help her students reach their full potential. By the end of Kindergarten, she expects her students to be reading at a first-grade level, writing sentences, and engaging in math, science, social studies, religion, and even Spanish. "I have high expectations of my students," she says. "By the end of the year, they are decoding words and writing stories." Her dedication to their academic success is evident in the progress her students make each year.
Jessica also recognizes that parent involvement is key to student success. At conferences, she provides parents with concrete strategies to support their child's learning at home. But she also invites them into the classroom to see firsthand how their child is interacting with others. "I like the help, and it’s a good way for parents to see how their child is capable of doing things on their own," she says. It’s this partnership with parents that helps her students thrive.
One of the highlights of Jessica’s week is the Friday Centers, where she reviews the week's lessons through fun, interactive game centers. "I set up three centers, and parents come in to help guide the kids through independent work. It’s a great opportunity for them to interact with the students and see how they’re doing," she explains. These centers give students the chance to reinforce what they’ve learned in a hands-on way while having fun and building social skills.
This year, Jessica was honored as a finalist nominee for Most Valuable Educator Award from TDS Telecom, a testament to her exceptional work in the classroom. "I am so grateful to have been nominated for this award," she says. "I love what I do, and I feel blessed to be able to do it here every day. St. Ann’s really is home for so many of us." Her dedication to her students and her unwavering commitment to Catholic education make her a true role model for teachers everywhere.
Jessica Matz’s classroom is a place where academic success and Christ-centered values go hand in hand. Her ability to connect with each student, celebrate their unique strengths, and foster a sense of belonging makes her one of the most cherished teachers at St. Ann’s. As she continues to impact the lives of her students, there’s no doubt that she’s helping them grow not only as learners but as compassionate, kind individuals ready to take on the world.
St. Ann’s is blessed to have her, and so are her students!
