In a world often marked by division, Pope Francis stood as a quiet yet powerful force of compassion, humility, and hope. His papacy reminded us all — from the youngest students to seasoned educators, from parish families to pilgrims in faraway lands — that the essence of our faith lies in love, mercy, and service to others.
To the students of St. Ann School, Pope Francis wasn’t just a figure in the Vatican. He was a living example of what it means to be Christlike.
“He inspired me to be a better person and acknowledge my mistakes,” said Adam.
Mary admired how he “never judged people and could put himself in their shoes,”
Ella was moved by his deep desire for “wars to end and countries to negotiate peace.”
Again and again, our students recognized the qualities that set him apart: empathy, humility, and unwavering love for the poor.
Leo and Dane said it plainly: “He loved the poor.” Sophia and Chiara noticed how Pope Francis chose a simpler life, and Wesley remembered his work for the homeless. Greta called his life story “inspirational” — from growing up in poverty to becoming one of the most influential leaders in the world. Fio saw how he “accepted people for who they are” and “opened doors for women” in the Church. Lucy admired his open-mindedness, and Emily simply said, “Pope Francis is someone I want to be more like.”
For our teachers and families, Pope Francis has been a guiding light and source of hope.
“He was truly a Christlike role model,” shared Middle School teacher Mrs. Talbert, reflecting on his humility, his background in science, and his bold steps toward inclusivity and reform.
Mr. Thelen, our Music teacher added, “His message and his smile were beacons of light—not just for Catholics but for the entire world.”
Mrs. Gates, an intermediate teacher, keeps his words close to her heart — and her classroom walls. “Do not bury your talents,” his quote reads, “Do not be afraid to dream of great things.” She sees his legacy as a call to nurture the gifts of the young and to raise a generation that is bold in faith, rooted in love, and unafraid to lead.
Pope Francis’ impact extended far beyond doctrine and tradition. He had a heart for unity — a message that resonated with parent Catherine Gorshe, who shared:
“I love Pope Francis’ call for unity among all Christians. His appeal is both a challenge and an invitation—to focus not on what separates us, but on what unites us: our faith in Christ, and the Word of God.”
His simple, powerful plea — “Pray for me, I need it” — spoke volumes. It was a reminder of his humility and the shared journey we walk as followers of Christ.
Some members of our community had the rare blessing of encountering Pope Francis in person — moments that left lasting impressions.
Parent Smitha Anna Manderfeld remembers celebrating Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square in 2017 and being inspired by the Pope’s “deep love for the poor.” Their son, named Francis, recognized Pope Francis in pictures before he could speak — drawn to his face with joy and familiarity.
Mrs. Jean Elvekrog, our Librarian, recalled attending a Papal Audience in Rome: “The Pope’s relaxed smile and the excitement and diversity of the crowd” were captured in a treasured photo — a moment of pure authenticity and love.
Pope Francis did not simply lead the Church; he walked with it. He challenged us, embraced us, apologized when he erred, and always pointed us back to Christ. He believed in dialogue over division, inclusion over exclusion, and love over fear.
And in doing so, he reminded us — in classrooms, in churches, in homes, and in hearts — what it means to follow Jesus with our whole selves.
We will miss him dearly. But we also know that his legacy lives on — in every act of kindness, every brave step toward justice, and every young person who dares to dream great things.
To honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis, all are welcome to join us for a Memorial Mass at St. Ann Church this Thursday at 8:00 a.m. Let us come together in prayer, remembrance, and gratitude for a shepherd who led with grace, wisdom, and a heart full of Christ’s love.
Rest in peace, Papa Francesco. Thank you for leading with the heart of a shepherd.
— With love from your St. Ann School Family
