Discovering Joy and Connection at Camp Gray
Last weekend, St. Ann School’s 7th and 8th grade students embarked on an unforgettable retreat at Camp Gray, a hidden gem nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Owned by the Catholic Diocese of Madison, this vibrant camp spans 225 acres of natural beauty and serves as a beacon of hope and community for all who visit.
A Vision Realized
The story of Camp Gray began in 1953, inspired by the heartfelt vision of Monsignor Francis Xavier Gray, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo. His dream was to create a sanctuary where youth could escape the distractions of city life, immerse themselves in nature, and connect with their Creator in a safe and nurturing environment. After a quest for the perfect spot, he discovered a pristine 100-acre wooded tract, laying the foundation for what would become a cherished haven for generations.
An Engaging Retreat Experience
Recognized as one of the premier Catholic youth camps in the country, Camp Gray combines safety with a spirit of adventure, making it the perfect backdrop for weekend retreats. Last weekend, campers like Sophia Ihlenfeldt, Brooklyn Hill, Ellie Dennison and Lucy Haser made lasting memories, especially with their favorite attraction: the big green tube slide that spiraled off the deck. "We would all get stuck in the slide!" they laughed, reliving those playful moments that added joy to their experience.
St. Ann middle school teacher, Tonya Talbert, shared her enthusiasm for the camp, stating, "I love that Camp Gray mixes outdoor leadership activities with faith-enhancing discussions and experiences. The retreat directors are so in love with Jesus, and their honesty about their faith is beautiful to witness. I'm also a little bit crazy in that I really enjoy camping with my students! It allows me to see them as kids instead of coworkers." She is already looking forward to the upcoming Science Camp in March, reflecting on the joy of watching students who had never been to a camp before play night games and bond around the campfire.
Year-Round Opportunities for Growth
The magic of Camp Gray extends year-round. Throughout the school year, the camp offers a variety of retreat opportunities designed to deepen students' relationships with Jesus while fostering a strong sense of community. These weekends provide a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing young people to grow in their faith and build meaningful connections with peers.
Engaging Programs for All
Retreat attendees can expect inspiring talks, enriching activities, and ample time for prayer, all designed to nurture both personal faith and a sense of belonging. Tonya noted, "This year, we had a candlelight Mass in the rustic chapel and then a spectacular show of the Northern Lights. That was a first for most of the kids!"
Conclusion: A Transformative Experience Awaits
Camp Gray is not just a camp; it’s a transformative journey where youth can flourish in their faith, forge friendships, and create unforgettable memories. Camp Gray invites everyone to discover the perfect blend of adventure and spirituality. Sophia, Brooklyn, and Lucy’s recent adventure, highlighted by the wonder of witnessing the Northern Lights, beautifully illustrates the magic that awaits.
