NOTES FROM SPIRITUAL COMMISSION – THE STORY OF FATIMA
This month we celebrate the feast of the Holy Rosary.
As a child, the story of Fatima fascinated me. I couldn’t imagine the wonder of Mary, Jesus’ mother, visiting children. That’s exactly what happened to three children in Fatima, Portugal, on October 13, 1917. Mary appeared and asked them to pray the rosary every day for peace and also encouraged repentance for sin. She promised that she would return on the 13th of each month. After that first appearance, many didn’t believe the children while others did. Word quickly spread and crowds grew each month. No one else saw Mary, but many witnessed her interaction with the children. After months of appearances with crowds growing each time, her final appearance was on October 13, 1917. Thousands of people were in attendance and that day has come to be known as the day the sun danced. There were many conflicting thoughts on what actually happened. A wonderful video for children to learn the story is called “The Day the Sun Danced.”

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make Grandparent’s/Special Person’s Day and the Book Fair such a great success!

The oodles of smiling faces on our special visitors and on the students who were able to proudly share their school spoke volumes about how important these treasured activities are. One of the things our special people were able to enjoy with the children was to shop the Scholastic Book Fair. This, too, proved to be very successful not only for getting books into students’ hands, but also for raising over $1,000 to support the Home & School Association’s mission of enhancing our school community. Hats off to all and special thanks to committee chairs, Danielle-Shumate Olson (Grandparent’s/Special Person’s Day) and Julie Buffington and Lisa Hill (Book Fair) and all of their committee members!
